  • ECC / BERS Congregation B...

Congregation Beth El strives to be that unique, shared space where through Judaism we explore what it means to be human and to be part of a sacred community.  In our building and online, we foster moments that celebrate the joy and wonder of being alive, and of finding intimacy and connection in the presence of one another.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I would see that joy and wonder nearly every day thanks to the children of our Religious School and Early Childhood Center - the way a child would run to greet a friend or teacher or even a Rabbi, and how their soul would shine singing along with Cantor Sher or our Hazzan, and how they'd laugh with friends and learn to love their heritage and feel loved as they being to more fully express their divine uniqueness.  Now that we are operating our schools through web platforms at home, I hope you've seen this too.

Of course our schools are just one element of what our synagogue does....Beth El also offers even during this pandemic, a variety of prayer services, resources for meaningful life cycle moments, courses of youth and adult learning, celebrations of Jewish culture, and opportunities for sacred action to uplift those in need, accessible online, all things I encourage you to explore and make part of your life.

I hope you've found a sense of belonging and opportunities for spiritual growth in our community.  Thank you for giving and sharing your family with us.

“In this ever-changing world, where nothing seems the same as it was, the one constant in my life- the one thing I know I can count on – is Beth El.”

That’s a direct quote recently shared with me by one of our members.  But, it is a sentiment that we, the professional and lay leadership of Beth El, have heard over and over since this crisis began.  These are indeed challenging times on so many levels: emotional, physical and economic.  It is at a time like this that we need the strength and support of our own spiritual lives to help us to continue to thrive as individuals, and as a community.  Sometimes it seems that there is little else within our control other than the spiritual world that lives within us, and in the hearts of others who share our faith.

The great irony of our time is also the antidote to our malaise: at a time when “social distancing” keeps us physically apart, our synagogue community is closer than ever.  We the leadership are there for you, as always.  But time and again I have seen you, our membership, come through for one another.  That’s what sacred community is all about.  This is more than a community that exists online through social networking.  This is a community that is real and tangible - one that will indeed come together in person again, and hopefully soon.

But in the meantime, we’ll be here for you.  And, we ask that you keep on doing what you’re doing.  Support our shul and the community it creates and maintains.  Beth El truly is a source of strength and stability, for each of you and for all of us.  May this be a season of renewal, of faith, of hope, of health and happiness for all of us.

With gratitude for all of you,
    Rabbi Krupnick
